Why Captioning on Slate
Captioning has become a must-have for video content on social channels, with more than 50% of Millennial and GenZ watching most of their videos with subtitles on, and even more with audio muted. Create high-quality, professional videos that stand out in today’s crowded digital landscape by adding customized branded captions in Slate. Adding captioning to your videos hasn't always been easy or accessible, with content often having to go through video editors and producers to add branded captions. Slate puts that power in your social producers hands to add captioning to any video you are wanting to create.
Key benefits of captioning on Slate:
- Fast & Easy to Use: Add, remove, or edit the transcript while auto-syncing with your video
- On Brand by Default: Never lose your brand footprint by having captions in your own font, color, and style

TIP: During transcription, captions will automatically be divided into groups. You can split these groups by creating a new text line using the “Return” or “Enter” button on your keyboard.
Customizing Caption Style
- Once your captions are transcribed, tap the caption text or the captions button
- Customize the font style (type, color, highlight, etc.) as you would with traditional text boxes in Slate
TIP: Once in the caption editor, you can select a single word or phrase to customize the style of that individual word or phrase. This block will be highlighted when editing.
Positioning Captions
- Transcribe your captions
- Pinch to move the position of your captions
TIP: Toggle our safe zones feature on by clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner while creating captions to make sure your captions are exactly where you need them and legible on every platform.
Resizing Captions
Once your captions are transcribed, there are two ways to resize them:
1. Resizing the text itself
- Tap the transcribed caption text or the captions button
- In the caption editor, use the slider size bar to resize
- This option will resize the font itself and potentially change how the words fall within each caption group. Resizing fonts this way allows you more control to format text lines within a caption group.
TIP: Once in the caption editor, you can select a single word or phrase to resize that individual word or phrase.
OR
2. Resizing the captions box
- Transcribe your captions
- Pinch to move the position of your caption
- This option will resize the “box” the captions live in as a whole. This will not change any formatting, only the size.

Inside the timeline view, you can control when and where each captioning segment appears
- Once captions are applied, tap 'Timeline' from the bottom toolbar
- Select 'Captions'
- Use your fingers to pinch and zoom on the timeline and control any text duration by dragging on the sides of each text box
